Magnetic The Shaman
The Jazzmatic Emcee
That’s how a friend described Magnetic The Shaman, and it’s fitting. The Philadelphia emcee is a direct product of jazz rap while still presenting a versatility that can be hard to find during a time when so many are saying “stay in your lane”. Further, Magnetic looks to collaborate and introduce his audience to a plethora of other independent artists housing a number of sounds, emotions and art to be consumed. With a number of projects under his belt alongside some of the best names in music, Magnetic The Shaman is paving his own prolific path.
Before starting his musical journey, Magnetic The Shaman admits to not really listening to much music outside of “Weird Al” Yankovic and parody songs from the golden age of YouTube. It was a project from his father that set Magnetic on the trajectory of becoming an artist. “I had to transfer all of his CD collection to a hard drive and keep track of everything transferred,” The Shaman remembers. Our hero took it a step further though, listening to and studying the music. “The things I picked out were crazy,” Magnetic continues, “Wu-Tang Clan, Big Pun, DMX, Eminem...that led me into learning more history.” This all collided when Magnetic was 15 years old, going through the struggles of becoming an adult, Magnetic turned to music to express himself. “I already had a love of words, literary techniques and devices and I fell in love with it,” Magnetic says and from there the rest is history.
“I’m just a rapper with a conscience,” Magnetic says. “Afrofuturist and nerd culture stylings over sounds that harken back to the Golden Era of Hip-Hop." While Magnetic can present braggadocio and lyrical gymnastics over a beat, his mission and message is much bigger than just bars. This is reflected perfectly in his debut LP “Pinky Ring” produced entirely by EYUKALIPTUS. The duo had talked a few times throughout the course of Magnetic’s college career. “I had made it one of my musical goals to do some work with him,” Magnetic recalls. After exchanging emails for a few months, The Shaman jumped headfirst into the process, traveling back and forth from Philly to the Brooklyn studio of his friend and engineer bxbymakingmusic, locking in for the sake of artistic and personal growth. The result is “Pinky Ring” which showcases the personality and versatility of a Shaman that has the range but also the raw passion for this music and people that some lack for the sake of the dollar. “One of the biggest goals is to heal and not just deal...it’s important to be real with yourself,” Magnetic says.
The Philadelphia artist has spread his wings over the course of his debut and then what would become his sophomore album in “Brown Recluse”. Another thing to take notice of in Magnetic’s music is the amount of collaboration and how often he’s working with a vast array of different artists. ASCXNSION, The Miserable Genius, G Mills, Soft Eyez, Tanya Morgan, Brainorchestra, the list is endless in who The Shaman is working with. The world is noticing too as publications all over the country have written about his work and willingness to relate to the people. Earmilk, Grandma Sophia’s Cookies, Plaze, performing all over the Philly circuit but also taking his talents to New York. He’s shared the stage with notable artists such as Sammus, Open Mike Eagle, R.A.P. Ferreira and countless others. Magnetic The Shaman has everything one could want in an artist down to his heart and passion for the people. He recently released “Three Treasures” a 3 track EP produced entirely by Brainorchestra featuring Donwill and Von Pea from Tanya Morgan. This is essentially a prequel to a forthcoming LP also fully produced by Brainorchestra to release in 2023. Until then, get ready because Magnetic The Shaman looks to carry the torch and continue to heal and motivate audiences for years to come.
